Rockhopper Penguin Chick

Went out on the AP wire today:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUST 1, 2008
LINCOLN PARK ZOO, CHICAGO
CONTACT: 312-742-2246

Hello World! A rockhopper penguin chick at Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago peaks out of its rocky crevice nesting den for the first time ever on Aug. 1. The chick hatched in early July and its sex is yet unknown.
Rockhopper penguins are one of the more northerly penguin species found on islands near South America, the southern Indian Ocean, Australia and New Zealand.
As their name implies, rockhopper penguins live and nest on rocky shorelines, and hop from rock to rock. Their populations worldwide have seen a steep decline over the past 30 years. They are listed as vulnerable due to the impact of commercial overfishing, pollution and global warming.

Chilean Flamingo

Picked up by National Geographic News today...

Chicago, Illinois, July 16, 2008—Skinny legs and all, a Chilean flamingo stands guard over two eggs at the Lincoln Park Zoo. This is the first time in the zoo's history that their flamingo flocks have laid eggs. The eggs should hatch in approximately four weeks.

The pale pink, gregarious birds are native to South America, where they live in shallow, salty lakes and feed on invertebrates, seeds, and algae. Human activities such as egg harvesting are the birds' main threats.

The Bad Wing

So named because insect collectors have a hard time setting it's wings due to the unique way the moth holds them.

And so it begins...

Welcome to my (hopefully) daily photo blog. I will attempt to post at least one new photo here each day...

...some may be from my archives, and some may have been taken that morning. So here's the first picture, sunset at Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica:
